The Memorial Girls’ Track & Field program roared into the SIAC Tournament and defended their SIAC Championship title with 187.5 points doubling 2nd place finisher Evansville North’s 93.5 points and dominating the other SIAC teams.
With the Thursday Prelims rained out, the SIAC ran a full meet Friday night, and Memorial didn’t hesitate to win the first event of the evening (4×800 Relay). The Tigers went on to win the 400m, 800m, and 1600m races before finishing the meet with a near-record setting win in the 4×400 Relay.
Five first place finishes result in 50 points, but the bulk of the scoring came from Memorial’s deep talent scoring in the top three in 14 of 16 events. A perfect example is the 800m as seen in the featured image highlighting Claire Sievern and Allison Morphew. Both regulars at Track & Field State meets and two of Memorial’s best distance runners.
The 800m is no different from any event. No more than 3 student-athletes per team for a maximum of 24 kids per event. All the more impressive that the Tigers finished 1-2-3 with Claire Sievern holding off teammate Allison Mophew with times of 2:16.70 and 2:17. 15 respectively. A great race watching Memorial’s stars push each other to through the finish line. Memorial’s Seve Felker finished third with a 2:26.72 running over 2 seconds faster than talented Junior Hannah Sale from Reitz.
