Memorial Girls’ Track & Field team mixed things up in their 2nd meet of the 2019 season as they cruised past the Reitz Panthers Monday with a 111- 20 win. What was mixed up was many of the Tigers weren’t running their usual events.
Ellen Hayhurst, for example, is a three event state competitor in pole vault, the 400m and the 4x400m. So, the team put her in the 1/2 mile and high jump, and sure enough, Hayhurst was still successful with a three-way tie for first place tie in high jump with her teammate Margaret Schulten and Reitz’ Lasher at 4′ 8″.
Distance stars Clare Vogel and Addie Schnautz decided to run the 300 hurdles and (thankfully) neither crashed over any of the 8 hurdles. 2017 State runner-up 1/2 miler and three event school record-holder Claire Sievern wanted to be in a sprint event. Sievern won the 200m easily in 27.37 seconds.
Sprinters got in to the unusual day too with the 4×100 relay team of Holt, Clark, McGuire, and E. Moran running a 4:43.95 4×400 relay (a LONG run for the Tiger speedsters). But hurdler and distance runner, Grace Jung, may have been the most exciting change as the Tigers inserted Jung as the anchor leg of the JV 4x100m relay. Fans claim they heard her scream as she took the baton.
Personal Records (PRs) abound despite the weird lineup. Below are the student-athletes, their event, and their PRs:
Taylor Gries. 3200m. 12:44.35 AND a 2:40.22 split in the 4x800m relay
