Memorial Athletics names Maria Heathcott Memorial Girls Cross
Country coach after the resignation of Marlena Sauer.
Marlena has been with the Cross County team since 2005 and will continue to help
assist the team as a volunteer.
Mrs. Heathcott will begin her coaching position with the 2020-2021 season. She is an
avid runner, 4-time State High School Cross Country finalist, 3-time State Track runner,
and 4-time State swimmer for Jasper High School. Maria swam 4 years in college at Ball
State University. She completed the Boston Marathon and finished 2nd overall in
Ironman Louisville and 13th in her age group in the Kona Ironman World
Championships (2016).
Maria is a teacher at St. Ben’s, Faith2Tri business owner, Adult swim coach, and RHCC
summer swim coach. She previously coached the Memorial Cross Country feeder
program and coached running/swimming programs at Frankfort High School. She is
married with one child and one on the way.
“We are excited to have Maria join our coaching staff here at Memorial,” says Athletic
Director, Matt Weber. “Maria’s skill set and faith will easily fit into what we strive to
instill in our athletes at Memorial.”
