Mark Schuler has been named the Head Boys/Girls Cross-Country Coach at Memorial High School succeeding the late Dylan Barnes.
Schuler just completed his 23rd season at Memorial High School serving as Boys Track and Field Head Coach where he has guided the Tigers to two City Championships, one SIAC Championship, and two IHSAA Sectional Championships in his long career.
The 1987 Memorial graduate was a stand-out runner for the Tigers from 1983-1986 and is no stranger to the program. Schuler developed and was head coach of the Memorial Feeder Cross-Country program from 1996-2005 and served as volunteer assistant to the high school program from 1989-2003. With the tragic passing of Memorial’s late Head Coach Dylan Barnes this past spring, Coach Schuler states, “It’s bittersweet to be returning to the program in this capacity but I am honored and excited for the opportunity to coach another group of distance runners and help them achieve their goals.”
Assistant Coach Marlena Sauer has been with the program for 13 years and will continue to serve as Varsity Assistant providing a level of consistency for Memorial’s student-athletes and Cross-Country program. She served as Interim Head Coach for the Girls Track and Field team this past spring and guided the Lady Tigers to a record-breaking season.
“After the loss of one of our beloved coaches and teachers, it was important to keep consistency and normality for both our Track and Field and Cross-Country student-athletes. We are grateful for Coach Schuler to step up and assume this leadership position in our distance program. He is a big believer in Catholic Education and will do a great job.” – Charles Roberts, MHS Athletic Director.
